" The story of Welby was born the request of a terminally ill patient to discontinue medical treatment because of forced and unwanted. If, as happens for some years, the principle of informed consent, that no one explicitly denies knowingly allows the patient to refuse treatment that is being offered, it becomes very difficult (including legislation) to justify the decision to confiscate the will of a Patient alert and conscious, but physically unable to escape treatments, in conscience, he does not consider these.
In order to avoid the risk that the debate on euthanasia takes dangerous turn statist, who allocate public power to decide on behalf of the patient, on the basis of abstract norms, and casuistry, if and when to suspend the medical treatment needed in cases like those of Welby is respected the will of the individual and the principle of informed consent.
The debate on the Welby case is not an abstract agon between the defenders of the right to life and those of the right to die. Say no to Welby is not to say no to euthanasia, but to say no to the principle of informed consent, that is the base Legal and ethical treatment of any contract, any reasonable and mutually responsible relationship between doctors and patients. "
